Satellite-detected damaged sites in Innwa

The ancient city of Innwa (Ava), located at the confluence of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) and Myitnge (Dutthawadi) rivers in the Mandalay Region, lies just three miles from the town of Tada-U.

Founded in the 14th century by King Thado Minbya, Innwa served as the royal capital for successive dynasties—including the First, Second, and Third Ava Kingdoms. However, following the devastating earthquake of 1839, King Tharrawaddy relocated the capital to Amarapura, and Innwa never regained its former royal status.

Renowned for its wealth of cultural heritage, Innwa has endured centuries of both natural and human-induced disasters. According to surveys conducted by Heritage for Myanmar (HFM), the 2023 earthquake damaged or destroyed more than 300 ancient structures in the Inwa area. The locations of these affected sites are displayed on the accompanying map.

The HFM team is committed to promote the systematic conservation and restoration of these monuments to ensure they are preserved for future generations. We express our sincere appreciation to all who have used the Heritage for Myanmar Application to report damage to heritage sites, and we warmly encourage continued public support in sharing information on affected structures.
